Grade Goal Calculator

This online calculator allows students to input their current grades for each course and displays the current average. It then calculates the number of B's needed to reach a B, if the current average is below a B, as well as the number of A's needed to reach both a B and an A.

Grading policies and practices can vary widely between different schools and even between different teachers within the same school. The most common grading system in US schools is the letter grading system, where each letter corresponds to a particular range of percentage scores. The typical grading scale runs from A to F, with A being the highest grade and F being the lowest. In most cases, an A corresponds to a score of 90-100%, a B corresponds to 80-89%, a C corresponds to 70-79%, a D corresponds to 65-69%, and an F corresponds to a score below 65%. In the A to F grading system commonly used in the US, each letter grade corresponds to a numerical value or grade point:

  • A: 4.0
  • B: 3.0
  • C: 2.0
  • D: 1.0
  • F: 0.0

Typically the average grade for a single course can be calculated separately. For example, if the student received 5 C's and 4 B's in math, the math average would be the average of those grades, which is (5*2.0 + 4*3.0) / 9 = 2.44, assuming that C is worth 2.0 points and B is worth 3.0 points. 2.44 is closer to a C than a B. For average grades, the resulting letter grade usually has the following thresholds on so-called 4.0 GPA scale:

  • A: from 3.5 to 4.0
  • B: from 2.5 to 3.5 not including 3.5
  • C: from 1.5 to 2.5 not including 2.5
  • D: from 1.0 to 1.5 not including 1.5

If the student wants to change his average grade to better grade he should reach the next threshold by getting higher grades. For example, having 5 C's and 4 B's in math (average 2.44), to reach a B average (2.5 threshold) he needs only one more A or one more B (there are multiple ways to achieve the needed average). To reach an A average (3.5 threshold) from his current 2.44, he needs 19 A's more.

The Grade Goal Calculator below calculates the number of A's, B's and C's needed to reach next average. If your current average is below a C, it will calculate how many A's are needed to reach a C, how many A's are needed to reach a B, how many A's needed to reach an A and so on. Thus, it can be a helpful tool for students to set goals and track their progress throughout the semester.

The calculator also includes customizable settings, such as the threshold for each grade (i.e., you can set that a B is reached at an average of 2.66 instead of 2.5) and the weight of each grade. This can help students tailor the calculator to their specific school and class.
