Partial Skein Yarn Yardage Estimator

If you knit or crochet, you’ve likely encountered leftover partial skeins of yarn. Knowing how much yarn remains helps plan future projects, but requires a bit of math. This tool estimates yardage quickly: weigh your partial skein, input the numbers below, and get an instant result. Note that this is an approximation; factors affecting accuracy are explained in the details below.

Partial Skein Yarn Yardage Estimator

Estimated remaining yardage

How the Estimation Works

The calculation uses a simple proportional formula:

Remaining Yardage = (Remaining Weight ÷ Original Weight) × Original Yardage

Since yarn yardage correlates directly with weight, a 100g skein labeled 200 yards gives 2 yards per gram (200 ÷ 100). If 35g remains, you have approximately 70 yards (35g × 2 yards/g). This assumes consistent density—generally reliable within the same dye lot.

Why accuracy varies slightly:

  • Yarn tension: Loose winding vs. tight balls affect weight minimally.
  • Moisture absorption: Humidity can add negligible weight.
  • Fiber blends: Density may differ slightly between batches.
  • Label accuracy: Manufacturer yardage/weight specs are averages.

Practical tip: Keep yarn labels until projects are complete. For lost labels, check Ravelry or the manufacturer’s website for original specifications.
